Aurora hunting is the activity of seeking out the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, in order to witness and enjoy their stunning natural light displays. For us at North Star Adventures that involves traveling to various locations in and around Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, where the aurora is most visible.

Our tours are led by experienced guides who know the best viewing spots and how to track aurora activity. Guides also provide valuable insight and Indigenous stories behind the aurora and offer tips on photography.

For many, aurora hunting is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a bucket-list adventure, combining adventure travel with a deep appreciation for the wonders of nature.

The weather during aurora hunting can be quite variable, but it typically involves cold (December to April), clear skies, and dark nights—ideal conditions for witnessing the Northern Lights. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect weather-wise:

1. Temperatures:
Winter Conditions: Since aurora hunting can occur during the winter months (from December to April), you should expect cold temperatures, often well below freezing. In some regions, temperatures can drop to -40°C/F.
Layering is essential—wear thermal base layers, insulated clothing, hats, gloves, and boots to stay warm while waiting outside for the auroras to appear. Even though you’re outdoors for extended periods, staying warm and comfortable is key to enjoying the experience.

Summer Conditions: August to September are the best months for aurora hunting. The temperatures at this time of the year can range from 5 – 20°C (40 – 65°F)

Fall Conditions: October to November -12 – 6°C (10 – 30°F)

2. Clear Skies:
Clear, Dark Skies: The best conditions for viewing the Northern Lights are cloudless skies. Light pollution from cities or towns can obscure the view, so you’ll often venture into more remote or secluded areas where skies are darker.

3. Wind:
Wind Chill: Winds can make the temperatures feel even colder. Windproof outer layers will help shield you from the chill.

4. Snow:
Snowy Landscapes: Snow-covered landscapes can make the environment even more beautiful and surreal, providing a picturesque backdrop for the aurora.

5. Moonlight:
Moon Phases: The presence of a full moon can also affect the visibility of the Northern Lights, as the bright light may wash out the auroras. Some aurora hunters plan their trips to coincide with new moon phases for the darkest skies and the best chances to see the lights.

Dress in layers to adjust to the temperatures.  You can rent clothing for us in the colder months. Details here.

Check weather forecasts for temperatures, wind chill and precipitation.

Bring a good camera with a tripod for capturing the lights in the best conditions.  We also have a few tripods that we can lend to you during your tour.

Be patient—aurora hunting often involves waiting, so preparing for the cold and being flexible with your time is crucial.

While the weather can be harsh, it’s all part of the adventure, and those who are prepared can enjoy the magical, once-in-a-lifetime experience of seeing the Northern Lights!
