YELLOWKNIFE: CITY OF GOLD & DIAMONDS!
Welcome to Yellowknife! The small, busy little city in northern Canada that was built on gold and more recently, diamonds. Join us for a historic and nostalgic journey as we go back in time and learn about the discovery of gold in the Yellowknife area by the first intrepid prospectors way back in the late 1920’s.
On this tour we start with a visit to the newly opened Yellowknife Historical Museum where you will be taken back in time with the photos and exhibits of a glorious time gone by but not forgotten. See the Timeline display of the Yellowknife area and Yellowknife itself, dress up in traditional clothing, get a photo with a famous Yellowknifer, Tom Doornbos! Enjoy a casual yet very personal question and answer session in the Museum’s restaurant area.
From there we visit the Prince of Wales Museum Heritage Centre where we will learn about the tragedy that shook all of Yellowknife with rippling effects all across Canada! Your Indigenous guide will share personal stories about living in Yellowknife during this terrible time. After paying our respects, we move on to learn about the discovery of diamonds!
Learn how the discovery of diamonds saved Yellowknife. Learn the history of diamond mining and how the diamond mines are made, it’s very cool! Throughout the tour, you will hear personal stories from your Indigenous guide about growing up in a non-Indigenous mining town. You will also learn how the mining industry has impacted the traditional life of the local Indigenous peoples back in the old days and how it is still impacting them today.
All along the way we will take photographs of you to capture the memories of your tour, such as photos with old equipment outside the Yellowknife Historic Museum. As lifelong residents of Yellowknife we can give you the genuine hometown perspective. We are from Yellowknife, we know Yellowknife! Join us for Yellowknife’s best Mining Heritage Tour experience!
