Yellowknife is the best place in the world to view Aurora! We are a smaller tour company, so we can offer a more personalized Aurora viewing experience. We take you out and “hunt” for the Aurora! When we reach our destination we park and view the Aurora. We will tell you about the science of Aurora, identify the planets, the many stars, look for shooting stars (make a wish!) and maybe even see wildlife!
As an Aboriginal tour company, we will talk about our Aboriginal stories and legends of the Aurora. If guests want, we will take photographs of you for free! Guests are allowed (n+3) free photos, additional photos can be purchased. All of our photos will have our watermark on them. We will be happy to offer our assistance to help you set your camera so you can also take wonderful photos of the Aurora. We also have tripods for rent for $10/night. We also have comfortable folding chairs for you to sit on but some guests like to lay down on the frozen ice and look up to enjoy the stars and Aurora!
Because we hunt for Aurora, we offer you the best chances to see Aurora! Other tour companies take you to their camp and stay there. We will go where we have to so you can see Aurora, we try our best for you. So if you’re looking for more personal Aurora experience, the best chances at seeing Aurora and like to meet other wonderful guests from all over the world and delicious snacks, this tour is for you!
Mother Nature is boss, so on some nights the weather is not good with too much clouds and we cannot see Aurora. So try to book your tour after you look at the weather forecast for those dates. Because of this, some months are better than others for viewing Aurora. We recommend the following months (in order of best viewing chances) to visit Yellowknife:
1st best month – August (+20C’s, fishing tour, waterfall tour, very warm!)
2nd best month – September (no WINTER CLOTHING NEEDED!, great photos!)
3rd best month – March (warmer weather, clear nights, Ice Castle is open!)
4th best month – April (blue skies, warmer temperatures!)
5th best month – January (clear nights, very cold!)
6th best month – February (clear night, still very cold!)
7th best month – December (some clear nights, ice road opens!)
8th best month – October (1st to 15th, getting cold, lots of cloud, low chance to see Aurora)
9th best month – November (15th to 30th, lots of cloud, low chance to see Aurora)
We recommend DO NOT come from middle of October to middle of November, we start to get all of our snow with many days of heavy cloud cover and low chance to see Aurora during this time.
The tour operates from 9:30pm to 1:30-2:00am (Pick up 9:00-9:30pm; back to hotel/B&B 1:30-2:00am). min 3 persons; max 25 persons.
