All about the MRCE05: 10 Day Wrigley to Tulita.

This Expedition starts with a 875km drive from Yellowknife to the picturesque community of Wrigley. Canoe and camp 253kms from the Indigenous communities of Wrigley to Tulita. Then fly in a charter flight back to Yellowknife. We will spend an additional night in Fort Simpson for those that choose our Optional Nahanni National Park flight seeing day tour and an additional day in Tulita to hike up the iconic Bear Rock!

We will spend 7-8 days canoeing and camping on this mighty Mackenzie River! Along the way you will learn the history of the river, visit traditional camping spots, visit and camp at the Old Fort Norman site, enjoy delicious traditional meals and hear stories about the river and the land, about our life in the old days and about our culture.

  1. Day 1 Road trip to Fort Simpson, our starting point

    After an early breakfast we start our 650km road trip to Fort Simpson, along the way we will see the world’s biggest wild buffalo. After lunch in Fort Providence, we arrive into the picturesque community of pop. 1500. Upon arrival, you will check in into your comfortable B&B, and then we all meet for dinner. After dinner the evening is yours to enjoy or join our tour of the community.

  2. Day 2 Fly into world famous Nahanni National Park!
    Today is option day for those that choose the flightseeing tour into the world famous Nahanni National Park! Land at the 315ft Virginia Falls, have lunch, then to the impressive Cirque De Unclimbables at Glacier Lake and then to the oasis of the Mackenzie Mountains, Little Doctor Lake! For other guests, the day is yours to get to the know the community, maybe golf on the Northwest Territories’ most beautiful golf course, the Seven Spruce Golf Course! Around 4:00pm, we are on the road to Wrigley, arriving around dinner time, set up camp and prepare for next day.
  3. Day 3 Our first day on the Mackenzie River!
    After an early breakfast and after a brief orientation to the day’s plans and last minute safety check, we’re on the Mackenzie River! Late afternoon we will arrive our first camping spot, set up camp and then it’s dinner time wow! What a great way to spend the day, canoeing, camping and genuine Indigenous culture** on the longest river in Canada!
  4. Day 4-9 Canoeing and camping on the mighty Mackenzie River!
    The next 6 days and nights we continue our canoe journey following in the footsteps of our ancestors and that of Sir Alexander Mackenzie, who paddled this same route over 230 years ago!  Early morning breakfasts, stopping at stops here and there along the way, “raft” the canoes together for a relaxing lunch floating on the river, take some time to yourself and reflect on your journey then sit around the campfire to share stories, enjoy your soothing chamomile tea and then crawl into your tent for a good night’s sleep out under the stars on the shores of the mighty Mackenzie River!
  5. Day 9 We arrive at our destination of Tulita, you made it!

    After 6 days of canoeing and camping on the river we arrive at our destination, the very picturesque  Indigenous community of Tulita (pop. 477). We will enjoy a relaxing evening in this tiny Indigenous community, check into your B&B, have a hot shower, let the muscles heal and maybe check-in with loved ones back home as cell service is available in this tiny community. After dinner we will explore this wonderful community and meet the residents.

  6. Day 10 Climb Bear Rock today!
    Today, after a hearty breakfast, we will join a local tour company and they will take us on a scenic 4hr hiking experience up the iconic Bear Rock. Bear Rock holds a tremendous significance in our Dene history. You will hear and learn about the Dene legend of Yamoria and Bear Rock. Back to Tulita, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy this historic community, meet the locals and enjoy our culture.
  7. Day 11 A relaxing scenic flight back to Yellowknife
    After breakfast, and after a wonderful day in this very picturesque community you will board your charter aircraft for a scenic flight back to Yellowknife. Back into Yellowknife, check into your hotel or B&B and enjoy a delicious wrap up dinner to reminisce some more. Thank you for choosing North Star Adventures!
